Pankration (Greek. - Pankration - vsebore) - kind of martial arts, is a compound of fisticuffs and fight in the front and on the ground.
In pankration resolved punching, foot, knee, elbow, clamps, compression, reversing joints. It was forbidden to bite, scratch and strike the eyes. There was no weight categories (only the division into age groups), no time limit match. Outcome of the battle was decided not the ability of one of the participants to continue the fight or voluntary recognition of its own destruction.
In the Olympic Games of ancient Greece pankration included in 648 BC. e., probably before this time, this kind of martial arts was not widely known. Most famous for their athletes at Olympia, who had gained a victory at the same time in pankration and fistfight. These awards were entered in the special lists. In the 2. BC. e., vol. e. nearly a thousand years of the Olympic Games, this list consisted of only 9 names.
